Where to sleep with Picasso and Schnabel
You’ve never said: “Hotels are just a bed and a place to lay my tired head.” The four walls do matter, as does what’s between them and on them. But while you’re sleeping, hoteliers are definitely not. They’re conceiving more ingenious ways to incorporate design elements using paintings, photography, sculpture and other objets d’art in the lobby or public spaces or as part of the whole “vibe,” down every hall and in every room...

In a sensuous vision of artful diversity, 20th century works by Andy Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Ian Schrager’s friend Julian Schnabel play well at this super trendy Manhattan hostelry. 2
Hotel des Arts
San Francisco, Calif.
“Two things I like: hotels and art.” For collector and general manager Hero Nakatani, this isn’t just a display, it’s a gallery originating with local graffiti artists. Every three months “Painted Rooms” are repainted, and he holds regular art “openings” too. Live richly in Jet Martinez’s “gold-leaf” Room 208, deluxe queen.
3

4
Chambers Hotel
Minneapolis, Minn.
Hotel owner and collector Ralph Burnet wants you to live with accessible, “exposed” art. You will—via in-room originals, and video art running a continuous loop in the corridors. Among the 200 pieces that include sculptures and prints is Young British Art by notables like Tracy Emin and Damien Hirst.
5
Hotel Max
Seattle, Wash.
Showcased to the max are 350 original paintings and photographs. Each floor features a different photographer. Seattle’s Charles Peterson is “on” exterior room doors: the 5th floor celebrates local music icons like Courtney Love and Curt Cobain. Guestroom walls liven up with vibrant paintings or watercolors. Art moves too: Ride the red leather elevator.
6
Hotel 1000
Seattle, Wash.
Technology meets chic. Curators from the Seattle Art Museum hold monthly art chats: “In the Studio with SAM.” Décor is a color palate derived from organic dyes, set against contemporary steel forms, metal sculpture and art glass. Guests get into the GalleryPlayer digital art on all 40-inch room LCD televisions.
7
Hotel Monaco
Portland, Ore.
“Art Lives Within” at the Monaco. Art’s also a lovable yellow Labrador Retriever, director of pet relations. Each floor features works by local artists and a bio; during nightly wine hour, guests are invited to paint and enter their creations in Monaco’s competition. A Curator on Call will guide you to the best galleries.
8
Heathman Hotel
Portland, Ore.
Out of the elevators you’ll see Andy Warhol Endangered Species silkscreens, while the purple and green Warhol suite pays homage to an original lithograph of a tree frog. Every room holds a piece by a Pacific Northwest artist. Heathman is independently owned, “doing its own art thing and giving back to the arts,” says the hotel’s Stephen Galvan.
9
Six Columbus
New York, NY
Soft modernism prevails throughout as French advertising and fashion photographer Guy Bourdin’s snaps enhance the late '60s, early '70s mode. His work was described as hypnotic, mysterious and surreal, and is framed on lobby and room walls. The photos—some never before seen—lend his characteristic Vogue magazine sensibilities.
10
The James Chicago
Chicago, IL
“Art is a passion of mine,” says hotel partner Brad Wilson, “real, authentic, not tricky.” Local sculptor Joel Ross’ installation, Room 28, is of vintage suitcases packed with a dismantled Texas hotel room. Southsider DeMarcus’ white-pencil-on-black-background mural dominates the Great Room. After dark, surreal street scene images project onto inner courtyard walls.
