1
Joe Thornton
The top player in the game for my money. Big, tough, skilled, young, and he can lead a team. The best even strength player without question. He's good looking and jovial enough to quickly put a face/personality on a new franchise that the community responds to. No way you could wrong with him as the first piece to building a team.
2
Jay Buowmeester
this is a special player. Despite wallowing in Florida, he is developing into one of the top blueliners in the game. Carries loads of ice time at a tough position for a young player and not only handles it, but excels.
3
Jason Spezza
he looks like he might be able to live up to the hype that surrounded him through junior and into the NHL. Brought along slowly in Ottawa, it appears he is going to be one of the best in the game for the next decade at least.
4
Marian Hossa or Rick Nash
snuck two in here. I like both, and both bring something different to the rink. I lean to Nash due to his all-around game, but Hossa's turning into a two-way star.
5
Derek Morris
tough, skilled and has leadership abilities. He'll run a power play, be one of the top scoring D-men in the league, play heads up all night vs. the opposing team's top line and fight just below the heavyweight division a few times a year. Well-rounded.
6
Todd Bertuzzi
huge and skilled, Bertuzzi's attributes are obvious. Probably wouldn't turn into a strong leader, as he is surly and gruff with everyone, regardless of how good or bad things are going. That said, he will immediately make your top line one of the best in the game with his presence alone.
7
Marc Andre Fleury
it's still really early, but this goalie could be the next Patrick Roy, meaning I'd take a shot with him anchoring a new franchise if no one on the list ahead of him was available.
8
Ilya Kovalchuk
unbelievable skills; but I would have concerns about his overall attitude. Don't foresee him turning into a strong leader, but it is hard to overlook a guy who might be the best pure offensive player in the game for years to come.
9
Vincent Lecavalier
has toiled in Tampa Bay during a few lean years, so he knows how to produce playing for a team lacking in talent. This kid has the game to be a super star for many years. Plays an exciting style - the kind of player fans will pay to see.
10
Peter Forsberg
He's 30 years old and has taken a beating his entire career, but he might be the strongest player on his skates to ever play in the league. Ho combines this strength with amazing skill and determination to produce one of the best to ever lace them up. His health and age would be a bit of a concern, but if he had three years with a new team, he'd be a great leader to start the franchise off right.
