1
Joe Namath
Quarterback
Jets, Rams
From the long hair to the unprecedented contract to the wild social life, everything Namath did caused controversy -- something the NFL had never seen in those days. And then there was Bachelors III, a New York bar Namath owned that commissioner Pete Rozelle forced the Jets QB to sell in 1969 because it was frequented by gamblers. Namath opted to retire instead of give up the bar, but then changed his mind six weeks later and returned to the team.
2
Terrell Owens
Wide Receiver
49ers, Eagles
T.O.'s latest scandal with the Eagles is one of many unforgettable messes the nine-year veteran has been involved in. Starting with his celebration dance on the Dallas star in 2000, Owens has found nothing but trouble. Whether he's pulling out a Sharpie during a game, insulting his quarterback or coach, or imitating other players' dances, Owens is a lightning rod for controversy.
3
Jim Brown
Running Back
Cleveland
Brown shocked the world with his decision to leave the game while still in his prime before the 1966 season. At age 30, Brown told Cleveland he'd rather focus on his movie career and helping race relations, even though he was still the greatest player in the game. Always outspoken and his own man, Brown never shied away from controversy as a player or in retirement.
4
Conrad Dobler
Offensive Guard
Cardinals, Saints, Bills
Dobler might have been the meanest man ever to play in the NFL. He was known for leg whips, biting, eye-gouging and any kind of cheap shot imaginable. In 1974, Dobler viciously punched Jim Pietrzak in the throat after the Giants rookie wished him good luck in the playoffs.
5
Ricky Williams
Running Back
Saints, Dolphins
After he failed multiple drug tests, Williams decided football wasn't his highest priority. He announced his retirement before the 2004 season and left for distant lands to find himself. This summer he changed his mind and is currently practicing with the Dolphins, but he'll never be able to out-run the legacy left by his strange trip in '04.
6
Duane Thomas
Running Back
Cowboys, Redskins
Nicknamed "The Sphinx" for his dark, sullen, moody personality, the Cowboys running back was in many ways Randy Moss-like -- a supremely talented player who seemed aloof and inclined to make waves with his every deed or comment. He labeled legendary Cowboys head coach Tom Landry "Plastic Man," before adding, "actually, no man at all." He also helped the Cowboys win their first Super Bowl in 1971.
7
Paul Hornung
Running Back
Packers
The "Golden Boy" saw his reputation damaged and was suspended from the game for a year for gambling on football. The NFL launched a probe in 1962 that resulted in indefinite suspensions for Hornung and Alex Karras. Hornung was reinstated a year later, but an otherwise flawless career suffered because of the scandal.
8
John Riggins
Running Back
Jets, Redskins
The best RB the Redskins ever had was one of the most colorful and odd characters in NFL history. Remember when he sported a Mohawk haircut as a New York Jet? And then there was the night he attended a Washington Press Club dinner and reportedly told Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor: "Come on, Sandy, baby, loosen up. You're too tight." After Riggins ended a premature retirement in 1981, he explained, "I'm broke, I'm bored and I'm back."
9
Randy Moss
Wide Receiver
Vikings, Raiders
The only thing that matches Moss' talent on the field is his ability to cause controversy. Moss has fake-mooned fans at Lambeau Field, told reporters he only plays when he wants to, chewed out a group of Vikings sponsors on a bus, bumped a city worker with his Lexus and walked off the field before a game was over. And Moss still has plenty of football ahead of him, so who knows what he'll do next.
10
Jim McMahon
Quarterback
Bears, Eagles, Vikings, Cardinals, Packers
McMahon was as brash and wild as he was successful. On a 1985 Bears team filled with characters, McMahon stood above the rest with his dark sunglasses, personalized headbands and footloose attitude. He even mooned a helicopter before Super Bowl XX to give people a better idea of what was wrong with his sore butt.
