Wasted by Camper van Beethoven
I took this tune literally when I was in high school, thinking it was a blatant celebration of stupidity. It wasn't until I got older that I realized how satirical it was. Like a lot of their music, I didn't realize they were making fun of people just like me.
2
Honky Tonk Heroes by Waylon Jennings
Drinking, gambling and hanging out in bars. In other words: classic country and western.
3
Scenes from an Italian Restaurant by Billy Joel
I appreciate the discussion of wine in this ballad. I don't think of it as a drinking song per se but I think it is evocative of my childhood.
4
Have a Drink on Me by AC/DC
This was exciting for the Lizards because Warner Brothers let us get the song for Beerfest. It was one of proudest moments to get to the point where we could afford an AC/DC song in our movie. We're giddy about it.
5
Tequila Sunrise by the Eagles
This is that one
6
How's My Drinking? by Guided By Voices
Robert Pollard's self-professed alcoholic dirge makes it kind of a downer, especially since it's about the destruction of his marriage due to his alcoholism. But c'mon, nobody said drinking songs are supposed to be happy.
7
Nightclub Jitters by the Replacements
This is a cool song that is good for listening to on the way out to the bars. In fact fellow Lizard Erik Stolhanske and I used to throw in this tune when we headed out to the bars at Colgate. A fun and exciting preface to a night out.
8
Van Drunk by Scud Mountain Boys
Discovering that Dick van Dyke was drunk when he was on the Dick van Dyke show means a lot to a kid. This makes it a really cool and terrific song.
9
The Blarney Stone by Ween
Ween has a lot of different themed songs and this is their tribute to the shanty style Irish bar scene. Like Camper van Beethoven, what appears at first listen to be a celebration is really them making fun of how totally violent and obnoxious that whole celebration is.
10
Punch Drunk by Uncle Tupelo
Crank up the jukebox, crack open a beer and rock out.
