Situated on a tiny coral island in a sparkling lagoon, this resort is a 20-minute boat ride from Male, capital of the Maldives. Its 44 stilted accommodations are constructed of natural materials, and have roof-top and over-water sundecks, open-air bathrooms, daybeds and a personal entertainment center. Seven of these are stand-alone 250-square-meter "Crusoe Residences," and are secluded, for total privacy, in the Indian Ocean; access to the main island is by private rowboat or pontoon boat shuttle. The 1,400-square-meter Soneva Gili Private Reserve villa, 500 meters from the main island, has an uninterrupted view of the coral reef and Indian Ocean, two master suites, a private spa, personal butler service, private speedboat with crew and other luxe services. Meals include seven-course tasting dinners served in the Gourmet Cellar as well as private-villa barbecues and desert-island picnics.

Spread over two islands in the South Male atoll, this beauty is a 35-minute private speedboat ride from Male International Airport. On the resort's Veligandu Huraa Island are 36 over-water, coconut-thatch bungalows; 92-square meter deluxe ones feature a terrazzo bathtub for two by the lagoon. Dhigufinolhu Island has a variety of over-water suites, floating in the Indian Ocean, including two with private, infinity-edge, plunge pools. For those who wish to do more than laze around in the gorgeous water, there's a surf school and PADI diving center.

The 13,000-square-foot Royal Estate has three separate pavilions surrounding a private pool, and features a private spa area and lush tropical gardens that border a private white-sand beach. The resort's 13,000-square-foot Miri Miri Spa occupies its own private island and offers Tahitian and Pacific Rim treatments. All resort villas also feature St. Regis' signature butler service.

The Wakaya Club occupies a Fiji island and was developed by Canadian entrepreneur and Fiji Water-founder David Gilmour. Its bures, or Fijian cottage suites, include an 1,850-square-foot Governor's bure that features a bathroom suite, private garden with waterfall and elaborate entertainment center; the 4,000-square-foot Ambassador's bure is a two-bedroom retreat, perfect for two couples. Vale O, the Gilmours' 12,000-square-foot island home, can be rented when they are not in residence; it has a cliffside swimming pool and tennis court, plus a six-member house staff. Activities here include sea kayaking, beach volleyball, hiking and guided nature walks, croquet on the David Niven Championship Court, and spa treatments at the Breeze Spa.

North Island, a private island in the Seychelles, was first farmed in the 19th century, growing fruits and spices, and producing fish and coconut oils. Now a luxe resort, its 11 two-bedroom villas are built of wood, local stone and glass, and have ylang-ylang thatched roofs. Dining is "no-menu"—that is, the chef prepares meals on-the-spot and according to guests' preferences. Activities include hiking, mountain-biking, snorkeling, scuba-diving and fishing, while the spa offers ESPA treatments. To restore lost island habitat, the resort's Noah's Ark conservation program is breeding tortoises and growing and transplanting indigenous plant species.

This luscious resort occupies a privately owned, 300-acre island three miles off the west coast of Malaysia, along the Straits of Malacca. Many of its villas are on stilts over the sea; among these are the Suria and Purnama suites, with a bedroom, lounge and bathroom with an oversize tub and windows that overlook the water. Activities include fishing; jungle-trekking; a cruise on a teakwood, Oriental junk to a sheltered cove, for a lunchtime barbecue or sunset dinner; golf; yoga; and tai chi. Accessible only by boat, this resort is located on Ninh Van Bay, Vietnam, on the South China Sea. The 154-square-meter water villas, accessed by teak boat, face the sunset and have a split-level lay-out, private deck for sunbathing and plunge pool. The 271-square-meter presidential villa is built at the edge of a private bay, and has its own spa treatment room, infinity plunge pool, dining room and 24-hour butler service. The hotel has a spa and watersports center that teaches PADI diving; excursions can also be arranged to private beaches, where a chef and waiter will serve you day or night.

This new, 128-suite Rosewood resort is built along a network of emerald lagoons and the Caribbean Sea, on Mexico's Riviera Maya. All suites—many situated on the resort's lagoons —have contemporary décor and wooden lattices and glass sliding doors that create a natural, airy ambience; the deluxe overwater lagoon suites appear to float along the water's edge and have a terrace with a plunge pool. Activities include golf on an 18-hole Greg Norman course; snorkeling and diving excursions; horseback riding; day-trips to Mayan ruins; and nightly tequila-tastings at the Agave Azul raw bar. A spa with 12 treatment rooms and eight suites is slated to open shortly.
