Here’s my Top Ten List (kind of like Dave Letterman’s) of why not to fly fish….but reader beware…..remember this is my list…..and it’s written early on a Monday morning…..after a weekend of fly fishing….and little sleep (who can sleep when they’re rising to a dry fly during the wee hours of the morning…..or even better late at night):

You think dry fly fishing means dry as in no water….and you have aquaphobia (a fear of water)….but want to fish any way….not a great choice…..

You think fly fishing is a way to get in tune with Mother Nature….but nobody has told you about the “tree of knowledge” that will be behind you on nearly every backcast….eating up every fly offered….

You think fly fishing is obviously easy after a few hours of lawn casting in a wide open local neighbourhood football field….again you haven’t yet experienced the “tree of knowledge”….see #2 above

You watch fly fishing shows on TV….especially Fly Max on WFN….you think you should try it (which you should)….but not just because you think April Vokey is so cute….first she’s spoken for….more importantly she’s a very good fly fisher…..she may be very “hot” but that’s equally as a fly caster (by the way, congrats to April on getting her Casting Instructor FFF certification recently at the Grand River Spey Clave)

You’ve heard the expression “trout bum” in reference to fly fishing….and figure since everybody has always told you that you’d never amount to anything….that you were just a “bum”….so why not be a fly fishing bum….but come to think of it maybe that is a reason to take up fly fishing…..

You think waders look sexy….but having a fetish for rubber is not a reason to take up fly fishing…..

Fly fishers get to wear fancy short little vests with all sorts of pockets…..again wanting to fly fish shouldn’t be about a clothing fetish….

Everybody tells you that you like to “tie one on” now and then (maybe more now than then)….but fly tying is not about consuming alcohol and fly fishing…..drinking is not all there is to fly fishing….by the way, that reminds me that I need to refill the flask I carry in my vest before getting out on the water again…..

Somebody told you that fly fishing is for snobs only….and you’ve always considered yourself above everybody else…..but really fly fishing is for everybody…..I mean if I can fly fish, anybody can fly fish…..

Somebody told you fly fishing is so easy that anybody can do it but……hold on a minute…..it is that easy….I mean if I can fly fish, anybody can fly fish….so get out and try it…..
