The English language is chock full of idiosyncrasies, with words starting with 'ph' being one of them. It's ironic that even the word phonetic starts with a 'ph' even though ask any 3rd grader how to spell it and the response would most likely be 'fonetic'. 'ph' in recent times has come into its own; calling someone fat might get you punched, but calling someone phat might get you a free drink.
