THE TOP TEN ways to annoy the X ray tech
The best ways to annoy an x-ray tech...Oh, and we are TECHNOLOGISTS. NOT nurses, not technicians. Not the radiologist (Though I wish we were!)

Tell me how you absolutely cannot lay on that hard, cold table. And tell me that in the most bitchy, accusing voice possible. Hey lady (or man, I'm not being discriminatory here) I'm not the one forcing you to lay here. At the end of the day, I still get paid. So If you don't want the images, talk to your doctors, since they're the ones who ordered them (probably incorrectly, too). And it's definitely my fault that the table is hard, never mind the fact that a soft surface does not give good pictures.

Do I need to take off my watch? How about my glasses? Uh, since we're imaging your chest and not your face or your hands, I think we're ok. Just keep your hands out of the picture and you'll be fine.

Don't you need to put lead on me? Lady, you're 78 years old. Are you planning on procreating anytime soon? So no, I wasn't planning on putting the full body shield for your hand X ray. Oh, by the way...did you know that you get more radiation from the sun than you do from this x ray of your hand? True story.

Act like I'm the reason that you had to wait. Keeping in mind that our facility has private dressing booths, attached to the rooms, with TV's and magazines inside.

Ask me why if X rays are so safe, the techs go behind the little wall to take the picture. OK, you are here for a couple of x rays, even if you get them a couple of times a year. We take a hundred X rays A DAY. That's why we go behind the wall.

If you're another medical professional (save for radiologists), assume that you know how to do my job. Just because you are an LPN that worked in a family practice clinic does not qualify you to determine whether or not your images are acceptable. Or, tell your patients that are about to have images any information at all about the exam. If you tell the patient that is about to come down for an abdominal series that "it will be one quick picture", you're very very wrong. There are potentially six pictures there, depending on the exam the doc ordered. So if they expect one and get six, I'm sending them to you when they get all pissy.

If you are the parent of a child who is having imaging done, please trust me when I tell you that I will shield them WHEN I AM ABLE TO- some exams cannot be shielded for, and run the risk of having to image AGAIN when the shield gets in the picture. Also, when I tell you that "and just for your own piece of mind, ma'am, the amount of radiation that we use for this exam is very low, about the same as what you would receive from the sun", don't tell me that I don't know how to do my job, and complain to the head of the department that I was being "very rude and disrespectful".

Assume that because I am "young" (I'm 30) that I don't know anything about radiation. Apparently, 2 years of X ray school and 5 years of work experience isn't sufficient for me to understand the principles of radiation physics. This isn't a 1940 shoe store, radiating your feet to see if your shoes fit. Technology has come a long way since then.

Assume that I am a nurse. No, I won't help you with your catheter, or change your bedding.

Get pissed that I ask your name and birthday. Look lady, we have like, 100,000 patients or something like that. If I were you, I would be happy that we're checking to make sure you're you. Because the last guy I had in here has like eight different kinds of cancer and frostbitten toes and his nose is falling off, so if you want his clinic bill, then I won't bother to check your birthday to make sure I have the correct patient
